Students
An overseas student can, under certain conditions,
obtain a residency and work permit in
Denmark
as a student.
A residency permit can be given to a person who wants
to work in this country for a short period
as a part of an education that he / she
has already embarked on in their home
country.
Conditions
An overseas student can obtain a residency and work
permit as a student if there is a specific
educational reason to warrant it.
The following conditions must be fulfilled:
-
The applicant must be at least18 years old, but not
over 35 years at the time of
application.
-
The aim of the practical period is to supplement an
already commenced education. The
practical period obviously, has to be
relevant to the education.
-
The practical placement has to be approved to receive
students.
-
Pay and employment conditions are the same as for
Danish agricultural workers.
Residency permit how long?
Students can obtain a residency and work permit for up
to 18 months, but not for a longer period
than the contract states. The permit
however, cannot be extended beyond 18
months. An exception can be made though,
of up to 24 months, if there is a college
residency of 6 months included. The
student can only continue working whilst
immigration authorities are considering an
application of extension, if the employer
and working conditions are the same as
before.
Can the family come as well?
An overseas student cannot demand to have his family
with him to
Denmark
. Only under very special circumstances
can the Immigration office give residency
to a spouse, a partner and / or underage
children. One of the conditions though, is
that the family must be able to support
itself and that they must live together
here in
Denmark
. A spouse or partner would also have a
right to work as long as a residency is
valid.
Consequences of working illegally.
An overseas student may not begin as a
student here in
Denmark
, without first having a residency and
work permit. If he or she does work
however, they will be deported out of
Denmark
and forbidden to travel in again within a
certain time limit (typically a year).
Overseas students also risk being punished with fines
or imprisonment. The same is applicable
for the employer that has employed the
foreigner without a work permit.
